Fishing is one of our favorite ways to connect with nature, learn patience, and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the outdoors. Whether you're brand new to fishing or already love casting a line, our Pack 42 fishing days are fun, relaxing, and open to all scouts and their families.
No need for fancy gear—just the basics will do! We recommend bringing:
A basic fishing rod and reel (spincast reels are easiest for beginners)
Bait such as worms or corn (live bait or simple bait packs work great!)
A small tackle box with extra hooks and bobbers
A bucket or container if you'd like to hold your catch temporarily
Bug spray, sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection
A foldable chair or blanket to sit on
Water and snacks for a comfortable day outside
If you don’t have gear, let your den leader know—someone in the pack usually has extra to share!
We’re lucky to have several great fishing locations nearby that are perfect for young anglers. Some of our favorite spots include:
Pope John Paul II Park (Dorchester/Milton Line)
A scenic and accessible spot with lots of shoreline and picnic areas—great for first-time fishers.
Turner’s Pond (Milton)
A quiet pond tucked into the neighborhood, ideal for a relaxed fishing experience.
Quincy Reservoir (Quincy)
A peaceful location surrounded by walking trails, with plenty of spots to cast a line.
Merrymount Park Lagoon (Quincy)
Easily accessible and family-friendly, especially during warm weather months.
Houghton's Pond (Blue Hills Reservation, Milton)
Popular for swimming and picnicking too—make a day of it with your family!
Fishing events are announced throughout the year and are open to all ages and experience levels. It’s a great way for scouts to learn a new skill, earn achievements, and enjoy time with friends and family. Don’t worry if it’s your first time—leaders and experienced families are always happy to help with setup, casting tips, and baiting hooks.
So grab your gear and come enjoy a peaceful day by the water. You might even catch your first fish!
